About

The Global Standard on Responsible Climate Lobbying project was instigated by AP7, BNP Paribas Asset Management and the Church of England Pensions Board, in a process supported by Chronos Sustainability. The underpinning research built on engagement work that members of the Institutional Investor Group on Climate Change (IIGCC), as part of Climate Action 100+, have undertaken in Europe since 2018 to specifically focus on the issue of corporate climate lobbying. This CA100+ engagement work draws on the analysis of InfluenceMap and of the Transition Pathway Initiative, and is also being spearheaded by Ceres with a US focus.

The Global Standard’s 14 indicators are intended to be applied consistently across all regions and sectors, with companies taking responsibility for the impact of their advocacy. Where there is misalignment the goals of the Paris Agreement on Climate Change, corrective action should be taken.

The development of the Global Standard

We acknowledge the input of more than 150 stakeholders from a range of professional backgrounds and regions who contributed to two rounds of public consultation on the scope of the standard (consultation #1 summary) and the draft indicators (consultation #2 summary). In particular, thanks go to the advisory group members listed below that provided expert input during the development process. The Global Responsible Climate Lobbying Standard is all the stronger as a result of this input.

The Global Standard builds on and acknowledges the work of all those across several continents who have been promoting attention to and action on corporate climate lobbying.  This includes initiatives such as Climate Action 100+, the We Mean Business Coalition, and individual investor networks including the Asia Investor Group on Climate Change, Ceres, the Investor Group on Climate Change, the Institutional Investor Group on Climate Change, and Principles for Responsible Investment. It also draws on work from InfluenceMap.

The investor networks that advised on its development released an Investor statement of intent, which calls on asset owners and managers, and the companies in which they invest, to commit to embed the Global Standard on Responsible Climate Lobbying.
